VOWEL SOUNDS
the seven basic vowels are speech sounds produced without audible friction of thr air passing in a continuos stream thriugh the oral cavity.
vowel sound are always VOICED, HIGH, MID, and LOW areused to describe the height of the tongue; and FRONT, CENTRAL and BACK, are used to refer to some part of the tongue.
THE HIGH FROJNT VOWEL
/i/ is pronounced with the tongue in the high front position, the unrounded lips narrowly.
THE MID FRONY VOWEL
/e/ is pronounced with thw tongue inthe mid front position; the sides of the tongue slightly resting on the upper teeth.
THE LOW FRONT VOWEL
/ae/ is pronounced with the tongue in the low front position; the apex pressing against the gum below the lower front teeth and the rest of the tongue is kept as flat as possible.
THE MID CENTRAL VOWEL
/ə/ is pronuounced with the tongue in the mid central position; lips un-rounded, apex touchuing nothing, tongue resting relaxed in the bottom of the mouth.
THE LOW CENTRAL VOWEL
/a/ is pronounced with the tongue in the low central position; rounded lips opened very wide; jaw in a very position.
THE HIGH BACK VOWEL
/u/ is pronounced with the tongue in the high back position, muscles relaxed, lips slightly rounded and spread in a smile, tongue pulled back upward and its sides touching the upper tooth-rigde.
THE LOW BACK VOWEL
/ɔ/ is pronounced with the tongue in the low back position; lips slightly rounded and protruded, opening smaller than for /a/.
